EASTERN JAPAN TOHOKU 東北

The Tohoku Region consists of six prefectures in the north of Japan's main island, Honshu. It is well known for its countryside, mountains, lakes, hot springs, high quality rice and rough winters. Tohoku is known for its spectacular festival culture, traditional crafts, historical sites, hot springs, and breathtaking nature.

Each season is beautiful and unique in Tohoku. Since the steep high mountains divide Tohoku into east and west, the climate greatly differs between the Pacific Ocean side and the Sea of Japan side. The Tohoku region is in northern Japan, consisting of the Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture, and Niigata Prefecture, consisting of 30 percent of the land on Honshu Island.

Spring in Tohoku arrives relatively late compared to other regions, so you can see cherry blossoms— one of the signature features of Tohoku later in the year than most of Japn.In junction with snow corridors and flowering cherry blossoms, there are splendid views of mountains, fields, and gardens all blanketed in gentle pink abundant in this season.

SEASON : SUMMER
MONTH : JULY - SEPTEMBER
Summer in Tohoku is famous in Japan for the biggest and best summer festivals in scale and popularity.
Tohoku is rich in lush green during the summer; mountains and rice paddies become verdant green, deep forests lie just outside the suburban areas, creating a green velvet carpet-like view.

SEASON : AUTUMN
MONTH : OCTOBER - NOVEMBER
Autumn always brings refreshing breezes and cool temperatures after a hot and humid summer. The forests of beautiful Tohoku become a beautiful medley of stunning colors. As the leaves gradually change color and fall to the ground, the splendor of crimson and yellow autumn leaves covering the mountains and valleys is another seasonal charm that Tohoku offers.

MONTH : DECEMBER - FEBRUARY
The Tohoku region is scattered with ski resorts, which receive heavy, powdery snowfall.
The area is also rich in culture and heritage and is famous for its traditional festivals and excellent onsen (hot springs).
